Encyclopedias define humanism in many ways. Because Af-x and the study of affectology rely so much on affective neuroscience - and declare that the science backs the therapy, then there is a need to provide a balance to the science. This is not a 'strategy' but a reality, since Af-x grew out of early Eastern concepts of insight therapy and the value of quiet self-reflection.
Mindfulness: A Humanistic Essence of Af-x Therapy
For many years, Eastern methods of emotional balancing and modification have centered around the value of mindfulness and quiet in-search as a means to help to re-address and revisit the perfection of our innate humanness. Japanese methods arose from a fusion of Zen methods and Western
Humanistic Philosophy Toward "Therapy"
One of the distinct definitions of 'humanism' is: secular humanism as an ideology that espouses reason, ethics, and justice, while specifically rejecting supernatural and religious ideas (see below) as a basis of morality and decision-making.
It posits that human beings are capable of being ethical and moral without religion or a god.
So, this, all above, is a metaphor for the renunciation that Af-x holds against mainstream talk therapy and cognitively-based approaches that are, in our current culture, the 'god' and the 'religion' of the paradigm of achieving mental and emotional health and wellbeing.
It may well be said that Af-x opposes ALMOST ALL aspects of mainstream psychotherapy, particularly in post-Freudian development (analytical).
Rather than that opposition being from any automatic adversarial position, it is based soundly on questioning of those traditional approaches placed alongside commonsense review of whether analytic, narrative psychotherapeutic approaches 'match' the facts brought forward by contemporary neuroscience. They do not.
The Af-x paradigm posits that there is no match between the science and the habitual way in which psychotherapy has been conducted, and that the narrative (talk therapy) profession has built a platform in social awareness that parallels almost religious belief in its verity or factualness, when neuroscience says otherwise.
So, by definition, Af-x is a humanistic approach that is concerned with human perfection (already inherent) as opposed to the hierarchical presumption employed by the majority of psychotherapist/counselors.
