The School of Affectology International has been teaching emotion therapy theory and training professional practitioners since its inception in 1998. Early courses were structured around the training in "Clinical Affectology" - the broader concept of helping people with their mental-emotional difficulties and discomforts. In 2002, practicing affectologists voted that a more focused and specific approach needed to be formed to protect (1) the quality of training when other schools were claiming to do the same work without the benefit of research, and (2) clients who stake some future in careful attention to the manner in which their engagement with a therapist is carried out. For this reason, Ian White, developer of the affectological system, registered the name "Af-x" (pronounced "affex," with emphasis on the "A"). In legal terms, it is permitted for anybody to call themselves affectologists, just as it is to call themselves therapists, but the name "Af-x" may not be used unless full training has been conducted and therapeutic success has been achieved through monitoring systems. Af-x is a protected name under International Law, and may not be used without permission of the owner of the mark. This website, separate from the What Is Af-x and the Emotions In Balance sites, serves to give you a broad idea of the nature of the course on offer and what the professional training entails. |

The Program
The program offered is interested in the study of AFFECTOLOGY as an important new look at how human beings operate out of silent yet strongly embedded emotional drivers at subconscious level of mind. There's vital information about the two territories of mind operation and how they almost never 'match' in mainstream cognitive behavioral therapy (talk therapy). The course entails a primary robust theory course that is a mandatory component for in-depth understanding of 'the affect world' in order to proceed to train in Applied Affectology to go on to work as a Clinical Affectologist. After completion of the theory program, you proceed to TRAINING as a Clinical Affectologist. See the page, 'Program' for further explanations. Following training as a Clinical Affectologist, and after a period of IGA monitoring of your paying ex-clients, you may become licensed as an Af-x Practitioner. The operational guidelines and proving of a satisfactory level of client success are strictly adhered to as a condition of Af-x registration. In other words, the Af-x level of therapeutic engagement with clients confirms a BEST PRACTICES attitude and approach to the therapeutic engagement. The "®" mark that is a usual appendage to "Af-x" is intended to guarantee confidence in a practitioner's training, proven performance and attention to an affect-only distinction. NOTE: This school teaches and trains ONLY in the area of Affective existence - theory and practice. The curriculum does not include any courses in the cognitive fields, counseling, talk therapy, CBT. Teacher - Trainer
All teaching and training is carried out directly by Ian White, developer of the Affectology system of study of human emotion, and architect of the Clinical Affectology and Af-x systems of affect-specific psychotherapy. White is Director of the School of Affectology International, and a Research Associate of the Applied Psychotherapy & Counselling Centre, Athens, Greece. Course Administration and Training Coordination is Carried out by Af-x Practitioner Darren Davis. Ian White has conducted professional training in Australia and Europe and has a long and successful career in teaching and training professionals. ... go here for more. |
____________________________________________________ A RESPECTFUL CAUTION
‘Healing’ and ‘cure’ are greatly misunderstood yet grossly over-used words. There is no such thing as a healer that exists outside you. There’s no such thing as a cure that does not involve your own inherent abilities to self-cure. People often want to become ‘healers’ or gurus of some sort who cure other people. They essentially do not understand what these terms mean. Many courses propose, at worst, that they can train healers. At best, they may not discourage students from using those words. But to not take a responsible stance on the matter promotes a dynamic that misdirects a single human being’s inner resources to take care of their own mind, body and self on all levels. In other words, shifts responsibility to others
Af-x is a strong advocate for recognition of the fact that all healing is self-healing and to recognize it to be otherwise is detrimental to the auto-healing dynamic. Training of Af-x professionals takes the same path. The School of Affectology International teaches the craft and art of helping clients in the only way that is self-generated and long-lasting – with the recognition that ‘therapy’ is never something that one can DO TO another, but that it is a skilful method of assisting subconscious resources to rebalance those parts of life that are in dissonance with present-day needs Just as a client person needs some understanding and acknowledgment regarding how they operate from an affect (emotional) perspective, this school regards the teaching of theory and understanding about affect states as being vital to the operation of Af-x in both conceptual and practical aspects. And just as a client person needs some understanding and acknowledgment regarding what has gone amiss in their lives from an affect (emotional) perspective, the teaching of theory and understanding about such misconnections of affect states is vital to the operation of Af-x as a therapeutic measure. While it may seem ungracious to call anyone claiming to be a ‘healer’ to be untruthful, it is interesting to hear an answer when asked “how do you do that?” But it is directly true to claim that schools who claim to teach people to be ‘healers’ are being deceitful. If you want to learn to be the best at helping people stimulate their own innate abilities and capacities to get better, be better and stay better in life, then the School of Affectology International is for you. Unfortunately though, if you want to take on the mantle of ‘healer’ or ‘curer’, then other teaching organizations may be able to appease that desire. As a final analogy, we ask, “how do you give another person love?” The answer is, “You can’t. It’s impossible. You must furnish the human environment whereby that ‘other’ is brought to the ability to love themselves: to bathe in a freely loving atmosphere.” The act of bringing someone to their ability to self-heal is no different. And that perfectly describes Af-x |
Pages in this site may be designated or described as WORKS IN PROGRESS. We are constantly developing our understanding of the human condition and will add further information as it comes to hand. So, "work in progress" for us doesn't necessarily mean 'unfinished' or 'under construction;' it means that we accept that all life is a work in progress. Continued learning and understanding is a work in progress. We share that with you.

Not only do I have no hesitation in recommending Ian
White, his work and his teaching program to any school, but I am adamant that
his Clinical Affectology has potential to change the face of psychotherapy, and
should not go unconsidered ... "
